How To Start A Business Plan (Ep 2)

How To Start A Business Plan // How to write a business plan? In this video, I’m showing you the basic steps to writing a business plan. When you start your own business they don’t give you a business plan. As an entrepreneur you must figure out how to write a business plan step by step on your own. I’m sharing all the steps you need to take for how to write a successful business plan from scratch in this tutorial series.

PART #1: Brainstorming & Getting Organized

Before you start your next business idea, you need to start brainstorming. You need to have a plan, steps and all – you need to have it all figured out, right? Wrong!

Before you start all you need to do is start brainstorming and get organized. The way that I get organized, I use things like Google Drive because it allows me to share files and I’m able to access them from the cloud just about anywhere I could ever need them. Most people, I’ve never really had issues with using my Google Drive. It’s a free resource until you hit a certain maximum and then you’ll have to start paying but it’s really cheap.

So I use my Google Drive, I also have an application called Evernote, if any of you have ever heard of it, I love Evernote and I use it all the time. I call it my brain, but it’s something to check out.

The other thing about these, is they have apps as well, so they have the desktop applications but they also have apps for your phone. I would encourage getting the apps on your tablets, your phone as well because you can use these from different browsers when you’re signing in and your content transfers across. It’s just easier to access if you’re on your phone and you need a file you can just download it really quick or give somebody access to it versus having to go and sign in and do all that.

PART #2: Write Sh*t Down!

The second step to starting any new business idea is to write stuff down, okay? I know some of you think, oh I’m going to put it in my phone, or I’m going to stick it in this, I don’t know where you put stuff but you need to write it down. You need it out of your head and on paper. Why do you think, when you were in school they kept making you write stuff over and over and over? To learn things.

Well part of the repetition process kind of has to go with, you see it, you hear it, you write it and it starts to sink in. If you have this written down somewhere, this is going to be your brainstorm, your business plan. When people say business plan, don’t get caught up on these fancy numbers. For me, your business plan can be as simple as saying, “Hey, I have these goals that I want to set and measure.”

I would set goals, measurable goals, which means that you can tie something to it. So set a goal for 30 days, 60 days, 90 days out. So, for me right now, I said that I wanted a goal of getting 1,000 YouTube subscribers. Even though that’s not an amazing goal to have, for me to be on YouTube, that’s a goal that I want because it unlocks things for the next level of what I need in my sales funnel in my marketing process.

Yes, I want you to subscribe if you haven’t already, please subscribe down below. I’m going to be putting links to all this in the description as well, but if you subscribe then it helps me one, get paid and give you more content. I do not rely on money from YouTube FYI, so that is not how I get paid but it does help support my channel and my content and help me move through the process, which, I’m going to teach you about later.

The whole process means getting started and having measurable goals. So on YouTube I have measurable goals and I say, at the end of every month, I check and see, I actually do this more often than not but say at the end of 30 days, or, like YouTube is 100 days, but they go off weeks, days, weeks and then months and then 100 days. So, I have goals set up for each of those of what I want to reach. So my first goal right now is hitting 1,000 subscribers because of what I’m trying to do.

Not to say that, that should be your goal, it can be any goal. It’s just you need to have goals that are measurable so you can say, “Hey I reached that.” Otherwise, what are you striving for? What’s your business doing? Do you want to have X number of sales? Do you want to have X number of email sign ups?

Whatever it is you need a written goal and plan so you can look back at it and say, “Yeah we got 100 subscribers, 5 subscribers, 1,000 viewers.” Whatever it is, it needs to be written down, where you can refer to it. Put it in a place like I said, getting organized, I put mine in my Google Docs, but having those measurable goals is going to allow you to see the bigger picture, way off into the future and be able to see what you’re reaching for.

Right now whatever your goal is, put it on your calendar and make sure that you have it pop up in 30 days from now, 60 days, whatever it is and say, “Hey did we hit this goal?” You need to be looking at it daily but to go ahead and put it on your calendar or even better yet, I put my out there and told everybody what I was doing.

I’m uploading daily, not that I’m making it every day, I’m trying, the whole point is to make myself accountable. So if you can put yourself out there and make yourself accountable, that’s another way to do it. You don’t have to tell everybody your goals, it can be something behind the scenes, because not everybody talks about those numbers in front of everybody. It’s just to give you some ideas of what you can reach.

The whole point is that you put it on the calendar now so that it reminds you later and it doesn’t get you off course. You know that there’s a goal in mind so in a month from now, if you’re not where you’re trying to be and you say, “Oh, well I didn’t even reach this goal.” Well then you can say, okay well why didn’t I reach it, what did not allow me to reach what I was trying to get to?

PART #3: Keyword All Your Content

When I started out I didn’t really know what I wanted to talk about. I kind of started talking about Amazon and eBay selling. I had started out talking about like girls and female stuff and I didn’t really have great direction. As I started to talk, I started to get feedback from people. I remember when I started sending Tweet’s out on Twitter and people wrote me back and they’re like, are you real? Is this a bot?

At the time I had no idea what I was doing, but now it happens to me all the time. So I know that it sounds like really spammy and it was a horrible thing that I did, but now I know not to do it. All a growing process. This would be my tip, pick three keywords, because you want your content to be surrounded around this, all of the time.

Say you’re talking about business, life and travel. Then you make sure that every video you put out or every piece of content you put out is someway going back to what you are talking about, what you sell, what you do. What is your thing? Are you a travel vlogger and that’s what you talk about? So you’re wanting to get people back onto your website, and drive your content in that direction.

So maybe you talk about travel sometimes but maybe you share behind the scenes stuff about travel. Maybe you share other things about your travel like where you’re traveling to, how you get your good deals. There’s a number of things that you can share.

So you want your content to be formulated around a topic. So if you’re talking about selling on Amazon and eBay you can’t also be talking about like female and their relationship problems or their body problems or whatever it is.

They’re two different ends of the spectrum and the people that are looking about your Amazon and eBay sales aren’t really caring about your female problems. So you have to pick three keywords that you’re going to center them around.

For me, mine are work, life, travel and I play off that vibe of, you can have your cake and eat it too. You can have the life you want if you’re willing to put in the work for it. I give people tips, tools, tricks and share with them behind the scenes of my life, my businesses. So it all has a bigger funnel, it’s just to kind of give you an idea that if you put a piece of content out there, ask yourself, “Okay does this fall into one of these three keywords or categories?”

When you put a blog post up on your website I ask you what category you want it to be in? So think about it, do you have where you’re just doing YouTube tips and tricks one day and then another day you’re giving business advice or graphic design advice. So these are different categories and those are things that you can think about when you’re putting content out there.

Make sure that it all relates back to the bigger picture, which is whatever you’re selling, your product, your service, your brand or whatever you’re going to be selling.

You want your content to be related back to who you are and what you represent, not just random stuff off fly by night, because people aren’t going to know what you’re talking about, what you’re doing and they’re definitely not going to come back and buy from you. Trust me.

PART #4: How I Start My Business Plans

So how do I do it? Everybody has their own method but these are what I use and what works for me and how I like to do things. So, I create these weird bubble charts, I don’t know if you can see this or not. It’s like the stuff you used to make in school.

So I create these bubble charts and they’re just a brainstorm for me. I just scribble a bunch of stuff down, and I mean I literally will just scribble everything and get it out of my head. Then I start planning and pulling apart all the stuff that I wrote down.

I use bubble charts, I also plan my content in a bullet journal. Let me show you, I talked about this the other day, but this is my bullet journal and I kind of color code a lot of my videos and content for what I’m doing. So I use these sticky pads.

I put these in here, I have my own method for how I store these and do this but even for this video, I literally wrote all this stuff down and this has bullets in it, I’ll do an updated video about how I actually plan but I just wanted to give you some ideas.

I’ll put a link to this journal and what I use down below so you can pick that up if that’s something that you’re interested in. I got the idea from someone else and it really helped me broaden my horizon about planning my content.

I have the bullet journal, I have thee bubble charts and also something else that seems kind of simple but I use a website called calendar labs.

I’ve purchased these things along the way. Bubble charts, bullet journal, and calendar labs. I use calendar labs to print out calendars and formulate my plan. So sometimes I like to have monthly calendar, I also have yearly or quarterly calendars. I also share these with my team.

I use the calendars for social media. I use these for just planning my content, I will put a link to those below, you can customize them, create whatever you want but they’re essentially blank calendars and you can formulate them for your business and your need.

PART #5: Branding Kit

I kind of call this, pulling the brand together, but before you can start the next step in the process, after you’ve done your brainstorming, you have all these ideas, now you’re saying, okay either you know what your business is going to be named and the colors and the fonts and everything that you’re going to use in it or maybe you need to pick those up, but I’m telling you, you need to have, what is called a branding kit.

This was something that was introduced to me, actually by and intern of mine and you can buy these, you can buy templates, let me say that. Essentially a branding kit, you have your fonts, your colors, logos, slogan, all of this in one place so that people can use this to help you make content. Maybe it’s a designer that you’re sending it off to, either way you have to have these things to set up your website, your email and go into the next part of the process.

So I have put together a branding kit for you that you can download below, putting links to that. It will help you go through this next part of the process. So you’ll have your colors your fonts and everything that you need and I’ll show you where to go to get those things and get them set up.
